Clary Alden Croft, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On May 30, 1969 a car crashed through a guardrail and plunged into Chester Basin, Nova Scotia. 15-year-old Clary Alden Croft and a man jumped into the water to attempt a rescue of the driver, a woman. The car was slowly sinking by the front and the man climbed onto the trunk and tried un-successfully to break the rear window. Clary Croft meantime submerged alongside the car and struggled to open one of the doors. As the car filled with water, the woman managed to get into the back seat and Mr. Croft, submerging again and again, finally succeeded in opening the rear door and pulled her out of the car to safety. Had it not been for Clary Croft's persistence in these hazardous circumstances, the woman would almost certainly have been drowned.
