Adrice Joseph Cormier, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On February 9, 1973 at Moncton, New Brunswick when an armed robber attempted to escape, fifty-seven year-old Adrice Cormier single-handedly arrested him in his flight and held him until the arrival of the police. A convict with an extensive record of armed holdups entered a local store where Mr. Cormier's wife was alone and worked as shopkeeper. With a stocking drawn over his face and gun in hand, the thief ordered the helpless woman to the floor and then emptied the till of its cash. Unsatisfied with the loot he had amassed, he sifted through the woman's purse. At that point, the man was surprised by the victim's husband who appeared on the scene with his son. The culprit attempted to escape by a rear exit but was stopped short by Adrice Cormier who seized him by the sweater and entangled him inside. They wrestled to the floor and a shot was fired, narrowly missing the rescuer. With courage and determination, Mr. Cormier disarmed the aggressor and kept him under surveillance until the police came on the scene.
