Medal of Bravery
Late afternoon on November 30, 1986, near Catalina, Newfoundland, Harold James Eddy, Garnett Jason Rowe and Michael White's calm and quick actions allowed for the rescue of the crew from a sinking trawler, caught in a rocky inlet. The engines of the trawler had failed and strong winds had blown the vessel onto the rocks. Mr. Eddy and Mr. White responded to a call from the Coast Guard for help. Mr. Eddy sailed to the inlet and manoeuvred his boat to a position where he could use a rope and a lifeboat to save the crew. Mr. Rowe threw a rope from the trawler to Mr. Eddy, and the two men pulled a lifeboat back and forth with the rope to rescue the crew. Mr. White maintained control of the boat during the operation, despite the excessive tide and otherwise dangerous conditions.
