Early in the morning of June 10, 1988, Ralph Lawrence Coltart saved the driver of a van which had hit a power pole in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, causing three electrical transformers to dangle precariously above the vehicle. Realizing the danger of the man being electrocuted, Mr. Coltart calmly urged the victim, who was in a state of shock, to remain within the safety of the vehicle. When the driver attempted to move the van from under the transformers, Mr. Coltart quickly reached inside the vehicle and took the keys away from him. The man subsequently tried to physically remove the transformer cluster from the roof of his van, but was stopped by Mr. Coltart and two newly-arrived police officers who carried him to an ambulance.
