On July 18, 1988, 22-year-old Mr. Hat-Chi Do drowned while trying to save the life of his friend in Dunnville, Ontario. A group of friends were fishing at the Grand River Dam when one man lost his footing on the slippery dam surface and fell into the swirling water. Mr. Do was standing on the river bank and jumped into the water in response to the victim's calls for help. He got caught in a whirlpool, quickly tired fighting the strong current which pulled him under and never resurfaced. The victim was soon rescued by people who arrived in a boat and Mr. Do's body was recovered by a marine rescue crew a short time later.
