In the morning of July 8, 1988, Manning Cooper rescued a young epileptic boy from a burning boat at the French Creek Marina near Parksville, British Columbia. Two men had been docking their fishing vessel when they noticed another fishing boat on fire. One of the men sounded an air horn to summon help while the other ran to a phone to notify the police and fire departments. Meanwhile, Mr. Cooper appeared at the scene, entered the cabin of the burning boat to awaken the sleeping boy, and then dragged him through the flames which soon engulfed the entire boat. The boy went into an epileptic seizure shortly after his rescue and Mr. Cooper and others attended to him until further help arrived.
