Medal of Bravery
John Aasen, Donald Lloyd and Cst. Bruce Barkley of the Grande Prairie R.C.M.P. Detachment joined forces to save a seventeen-year-old girl from a fiery death. Early in the morning of 4 July 1982, fire broke out at the Aasen residence. Mr. Lloyd grabbed a ladder and a garden hose and dashed across the street. Knowing that the young girl was trapped in her upstairs bedroom and the firefighters still miles away, he and Mr. Aasen (the girl=s brother) went up the ladder, sprayed the room to dissipate the dense smoke and entered through a broken window. They found the victim unconscious, carried her to the window and shouted for help - they were experiencing jolting electrical shocks because the cord of an appliance had melted and the current was passing through the area where the water had been sprayed. The electrical current was also passing down the aluminum ladder but Cst. Barkley climbed to the window and brought the girl to the ground. Messrs. Aasen and Lloyd followed.
