On December 6, 1989, Ms. Provost attempted to dissuade a gunman from shooting a group of female students at the École polytechnique de Montréal. Her efforts were in vain and he began firing, seriously wounding Ms. Provost and killing most of the other students. Later, in spite of her injuries, she tried to open a door to get help. Finding herself a few metres from the attacker, she quietly closed the door and told the two other surviving women to play dead until help arrived.
