On December 12, 1992, Mr. St-Arnaud saved a child from drowning in the Cheval Blanc River in Gatineau, Quebec. Seeing the young girl walking on the ice toward open water, he went to the river's edge to warn her. At that very moment, the ice broke beneath the child and she plunged into the water. Mr. St-Arnaud hurried onto the fragile surface and crawled toward the victim, who clung to the edge of the ice. Grabbing the child by her coat, Mr. St-Arnaud pulled her out of the water. Although the ice continued to break under his weight, he was able to carry the child to safety.
