On May 18, 1992, Ms. Coté saved her common-law spouse from drowning in the Ste-Anne River at St-Raymond-de-Portneuf, Quebec. The couple were driving on an all-terrain vehicle and when they reached a train bridge, Ms. Coté decided to walk across it while her husband drove along the tracks. Suddenly he lost control of the vehicle and fell about seven meters into the cold, deep water. Aware that the man could not swim, and in spite of her poor health, Ms. Coté dove into the river. She succeeded in swimming against a strong current, grabbed her spouse by the arm and managed to tow him back to shore.
