On November 12, 1993, Caroline Deschênes, then eight years of age, saved her handicapped brother from being killed by an out-of-control front-end loader in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The two children were playing outside their family's home when the loader headed straight for them. Caroline seized her brother by the hand and tried to pull him to safety, but, not seeing the vehicle and not understanding the seriousness of the situation, he resisted her efforts. Caroline nonetheless succeeded in dragging him closer to the house. He was thus saved from being crushed, but suffered a broken leg when the vehicle hit him.
