Arms of John Joseph Pope

Blazon

Azure a rose between three griffins' heads erased Or;

Symbolism

The design is a modification of the arms of Pope of Cornwall, used by several generations of Mr. Pope’s family. To these arms have been added a single rose, as roses appear in the arms of Mr. Pope’s great-grandfather, Sir Henri-Thomas Taschereau, and in the arms of his maternal grandfather, Count Jules du Monceau de Bergendal.

Crest

Blazon

A griffin passant Or holding an escutcheon quarterly, first Gules, second Or, third and fourth Azure, a base Argent;

Symbolism

In the past, Mr. Pope’s family has used a crest of a white griffin with a collar, which was originally granted to a member of the Pope family of Cornwall. Here, the griffin is gold and it is holding a shield. The shield pays tribute to Mr. Pope’s grandfather, Sir Joseph Pope, Canada’s first Under Secretary of State for External Affairs. Sir Joseph was largely responsible for the design of the Royal Arms of Canada in 1921, and in recognition of this fact, the griffin is holding an “uncharged” version of those arms, meaning the colours are used but not the charges (symbols).

Motto

Blazon

VERITATI OBŒDIENS;

Symbolism

This Latin phrase means “Obedient to the Truth”. This makes a reference to the motto of the Dominican Order, Veritas (truth). Mr. Pope has been associated with the Dominicans for many years.
