Le colonel Vernon de l’armée britannique a servi en Afghanistan à titre de chef d’état-major du Commandement régional Sud de la brigade multinationale de février à octobre 2006. Ce penseur stratégique et organisateur hors pair a mis sur pied un quartier général multinational fonctionnel et efficace dès son entrée en fonction sur le théâtre des opérations. Le succès des opérations de combat est en grande partie attribuable à ses habiletés de planification et à sa connaissance de la tactique et des opérations. Il a joué un rôle clé dans les opérations d’information, tant par ses échanges avec le personnel du corps de l’armée nationale afghane que par sa coordination des ressources britanniques. En appuyant les objectifs stratégiques de la mission canadienne en Afghanistan, le colonel Vernon a fait grand honneur au Royaume-Uni, aux Forces canadiennes et au Canada.
