Welcome all of you to Rideau Hall for this presentation of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards.

I am delighted to be here with all of you, gathered on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe people, to celebrate the performing arts.

Your stories create dialogue and understanding. They also shine a spotlight on different perspectives.

Today’s ceremony is a reminder that we are here to build bridges, exchange ideas, explore avenues for co-operation and keep the channels of communication open.

It is with great pride that I stand before you to recognize the history and the contributions of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This regiment holds a unique place in our nation's story, as the oldest regiment in all of Canada.

I am honoured to be here with you today to mark the 100th anniversary of the Newfoundland National War Memorial. Today, we also pay tribute to this unknown son of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Unknown Soldier who has finally returned home.

I am delighted to be here today and to accept the position of honorary chief commissioner. For more than six decades, the members of the Canadian Coast Guard have protected our waters, and have ensured our safety and security.

This year, we are celebrating 75 years since Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation. This anniversary is a time to celebrate the past and to look towards the future. Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be leaders in innovation in such areas as sustainable development and ocean science.

Every member of the Forces plays an invaluable role in keeping Canadians safe. Today, we have a unique opportunity to thank General Eyre for his service, while welcoming General Carignan as the next chief of the Defence Staff.

This anniversary of the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council is a celebration of all the communities, big and small, that you have made stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous over the decades.

Here you are today, facing off against the best athletes in the world. Many of you have achieved rare feats—and broken world records—in your sport.

Today’s ceremony is a reminder of the importance of strong diplomatic ties. It reaffirms our commitment to working together to address our most pressing global issues.

In Canada, we strive for equality. We welcome new ideas and perspectives. Because we know that everyone has unique strengths and insights to offer.

Today, we commemorate the thousands of lives forever lost or traumatically impacted by the residential school system.

The flag we stand under was designed in consultation with Survivors of the residential school system from across Canada.

The Order of Canada is not just about past achievements. It is about the ongoing journey of our nation. It is a call to continue striving for greatness, and to inspire further positive change around you.

Today’s ceremony is a reminder that we are here to join forces as we face unprecedented global challenges.

Every year, from the end of October until Remembrance Day, tens of millions of Canadians wear a poppy. We honour those who served, those who are serving today, and those who never made it home.

95 years ago, thanks to the courage of five brilliant Albertan women, Canada’s highest court of appeal officially recognized women as “persons”. This decision was a big leap forward for women’s participation in public and political life.
