Visit to Toronto - Day 1

His Excellency hosted a round table on youth engagement with 65 youth from the Toronto area. Organized in partnership with United Way Toronto, the one-day discussion focused on defining meaningful youth involvement, identifying challenges faced by youth and how to address them, as well as finding new innovating ways and opportunities to better assist them in their endeavours. President and CEO of United Way Toronto Susan McIsaac offered opening remarks.

The recently appointed Chief of the Defence Staff General Tom Lawson also delivered a speech.

Among guest speakers, Rick Hillier, one of the former Chiefs of the Defence Staff, was also in attendance.

The Governor General was the guest of honour, and as commander-in-chief, he addressed Canadian Forces members and their families: “So many here with us today embody the never-give-up spirit of our Canadian Forces. One reason why I am so proud to be commander-in-chief is because you inspire Canadians across the country, myself included, who see what you do every day, who understand what you have done throughout your lives. You inspire us to be better people, to strive for a more peaceful and just society. ”

Their Excellencies attended the fourth annual True Patriot Love Tribute Dinner, which honours and supports members of the Canadian Forces and their families. The National Anthem was sang by Countermeasure.

Following the break-out sessions, the youth shared their ideas with the rest of the group.

Their Excellencies heard their views and ideas on the three themes of the discussion during their break-out sessions.

Established in 1956, United Way Toronto is a charity dedicated to creating opportunities for a better life for everyone. Working in partnership with other individuals and organizations, it mobilizes people and resources to support a network of agencies that help people when they need it most. United Way also addresses the root causes of social problems, working to change community conditions for the better over the long term.

Mr. Kevin Lynch, Vice-Chair of BMO Financial Group and former Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet, also said a few words.

His Excellency also addressed the youth: “I am looking to you because the need in our communities is real, and it is growing—and because when it comes to caring in Canada, you are leading lights. You are young leaders who are actively involved in your communities, and that gives you a unique and important perspective on volunteerism.”

During the evening, Sergent Neilson was honoured for his service to the country.True Patriot Love is a national foundation that supports and honours members of the Canadian military and their families. . It was founded by a group of citizens dedicated to building bridges between Canadian civilians and their military, in order to better understand and appreciate the sacrifices of soldiers and their families. In celebrating the patriotism of our military families, the foundation also strives to inspire Canadians to serve their country, whether it’s in or out of uniform.
