Crown-First Nations Gathering

"I am inspired, and I am hopeful, seeing us here together. My hope is that this gathering will serve as the foundation for a renewed and strengthened relationship between the Crown and First Nations. By going back to first principles, we can work with greater confidence—together—to create a brighter future for our families, our communities and our country."

In the afternoon, Their Excellencies welcomed Young First Nations Representatives to Rideau Hall.

Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, also delivered remarks during this historic event.

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, delivered an address.

The Governor General opened the Crown-First Nations Gathering. Before the ceremony, First Nations Veteran Percy Joe lead a procession that included, among others, the Governor General; Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada; and Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

On behalf of the Crown, the Governor General offered a framed painting of the Battle of Queenston Heights to Chief Atleo.

Chief Shawn Atleo exchange gifts with the Governor General. Chief Atleo offered a framed wampum belt on behalf of the Assembly of First Nations.

All were very attentive when Elder Bertha Commanda said the Opening Prayer.

Elder Dave Courchene explained the significance of the Honour Song performed when the procession was entering Victoria Hall, at the John G. Diefenbaker building, in Ottawa.
