First Official Visit to Yukon | June 18, 2007

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, takes in a photo exhibit at the Arts Underground studio and gallery in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The facilities were donated by a property management company to the arts community to allow artist to exhibit their works and provide classes to the public.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, participated in a discussion on civic engagement called “Living Together.”

Around thirty representatives from social agencies and non-profit organizations serving young people, women, Aboriginals, immigrants, the poor, and those suffering from addictions discussed the needs of people in Whitehorse and the surrounding regions, the efforts being made to solve the problems, and the accomplishments of which they are proud.

The Art Matters forums encourage dialogue and provide a place for reflection on the creative process and society’s perception of art. Similar discussions have already taken place during the Governor General’s official visits to other provinces and territories. These conversations go beyond politics and funding, and offer a unique vantage point on a culture in motion.
