Rideau Hall, Tuesday, October 21, 2014
Welcome to Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada.
One of the great privileges of being governor general comes in presenting the Decorations for Bravery to deserving Canadians.
I have participated in a number of these ceremonies during my mandate, and I never fail to be moved by the courage that people often show in extreme situations.
Those of you being recognized today have likewise shown extraordinary courage when called upon by circumstance to act.
I am truly humbled by your stories of selflessness and bravery.
What is it that compels an individual or a group of people to risk their own safety for that of another person?
I think about this question often, particularly when considering the nature of duty and service to others. Yours, in fact, is the most extreme example of philanthropy, which literally translates as “love of mankind.”
After all, what could be more generous and necessary than to help someone who is in immediate danger?
Bravery. Courage. Valour. These are mere words, but you have breathed life into them through your actions.
Seeing you gathered here today, I am reminded of the story of “the wrong-way guy,” which is based on a photo that I once saw during a visit to Saskatchewan. The photo depicted an emergency situation at a school. Students and teachers were streaming out of the building, but one figure—a police officer, whom I like to call “the wrong-way guy”—was going against the tide, heading with purpose towards the danger.
That is akin to your actions. You went “the wrong way” too, because you understand that helping others in need is in fact the right way, the only human way to respond. Your actions have inspired us all.
Tragically, in some cases, the bravest among us lose their own lives while trying to save others. To the families and friends of the fallen, I offer my deepest condolences, and hope that you can find some comfort in the memory of your loved one’s bravery.
And to all the recipients of the Decorations for Bravery, I would like to offer my sincere thanks for your courage and your caring. Your example is an inspiration to all Canadians.
Congratulations on this deserved honour.
