I am pleased to welcome you to Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada, to recognize truly remarkable acts of bravery.

Throughout the first half of my mandate as governor general, I have seen countless examples of Canadians helping others. Ours is a compassionate society, where people care for those who need a helping hand.

And that sense of caring finds perhaps its fullest and most vivid expression when one risks their own safety and well-being to help another person.

Sometimes, it is a friend, neighbour or family member who is helped by such bravery. Other times, it is a total stranger.

The recipients of the Decorations for Bravery inspire us all by their example. Each of them speaks to our capacity as human beings to rise above narrow self-interest, to serve a cause greater than ourselves.

To each of you: I am humbled by your actions.

Whatever the details of your particular story, you were able to set aside the instinct for self-preservation. You were compelled to act, and your actions speak loudly about your character and resolve in the face of danger.

Your bravery is an extraordinary expression of strength, selflessness and courage.

You have also had an immeasurable impact on the lives and families of those you reached out for and helped. And you remind us that, above all, we make the world a better place by what we do for others.

That is why we honour you today.

This is such a special ceremony. Besides being an occasion to present the decorations for bravery, this morning affords an opportunity for recipients to meet and speak with those who have been affected by these remarkable acts.

Here at Rideau Hall, there are few moments more poignant. This is an opportunity to give thanks, to get to know one another, to discover your diverse backgrounds, as well as all that you have in common.

This morning is a chance to glimpse all that has been gained through these acts of bravery. Seeing you here in this ballroom, I feel a great sense of gratitude at our good fortune and hope for our future.

Today, we also remember those who did not make it, who are not able to be here with us.

The Decorations for Bravery are symbolic of our very best selves, as Canadians and as people.

We have a long history of helping each other in this country, and we must build on this tradition and deepen our consideration and concern for others.

Our recipients have truly answered the call to service, and I am honoured to present these decorations as a symbol of our respect and gratitude for their tremendous courage.

On behalf of all Canadians, thank you.
