My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I would like to sincerely thank the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation for inviting the entire community to take part in this feast to celebrate my first official visit to Yukon.
I had the chance earlier to speak with young people and elders, women and men, and I was greatly impressed by how dynamic and open your community is.
The summer solstice is fast approaching and I feel like this moment with you will be one of my dearest memories as governor general.
What I have seen here, and what I see today, will stay with me for years to come.
I need to tell Canadians about your history and the spirit that lives here in this immense land, almost untouched by abuse and overexploitation.
The example you are setting for humanity is a beacon of hope and I want it to be seen south of the sixtieth parallel.
I am very touched by this welcome and I will never forget you.
I will tell everyone I meet of the wisdom and kindness of the people here, people who make fellowship and respect for nature a way of life.
We thank you for giving us hope for a better world.
