I am very pleased to join you today for the presentation of 412 Transport Squadron’s new Colours.

As the commander-in-chief of the Canadian Forces, I of course know how deeply significant this ceremony is for a squadron such as yours.

And as someone who has had the privilege of flying with the professionals of 412 Transport Squadron, I am very aware of the exemplary job you do, often in very challenging conditions.

Everyone gathered here knows that you have much to be proud of. And while others will address the illustrious history of this Squadron, as well as the symbolism of these new Colours, I would like to speak of the special relationship that has long existed between the Office of the Governor General and 412 Squadron.

My team and I have had the privilege of flying with your unit’s aircrew. I am very aware of the exemplary job pilots, flight stewards and engineers do, often in very challenging conditions. But I also wish to acknowledge the important contribution of the civilian operations staff of the squadron.

In the past year, my official duties have taken me to every region of Canada, and to a number of destinations abroad, including Europe and South America.

On each of these occasions, the accomplished men and women of this Squadron have ensured that my party and I arrived safely and on time, regardless of weather conditions, the distance to be traveled, and time zones to be crossed, the characteristics of the aerodromes at destination, and many other challenges which have to be addressed in the planning and execution stages of a given air movement tasking.

I can honestly say that I could not carry out my duties as effectively, or reach as many Canadians as I have, if it were not for the tireless efforts of everyone attached to this Squadron. Your legendary flexibility and constant availability have contributed to the success of my travels, be they in large urban centers or in remote areas of this great land of ours.

This is a role that you and your predecessors have carried out flawlessly for many decades.

And so, on behalf of everyone who has flown with 412 Transport Squadron, I salute you on this special day, as you receive this new Standard.

You can take great pride in the Squadron’s storied past, and in the fact that you all provide an invaluable service in the present day.

I thank you all for your dedication and professionalism, and I congratulate you on your safety record. You set an example to your peers and to the entire aviation community. I look forward to many more successful voyages in your expert care.
