Rideau Hall, Friday, December 2, 2005
What a privilege it is for me today to honour the merit of women and men who embody the most noble expression of bravery. The magnitude of your deeds knows no bounds for those whose lives you saved. Your courage is equalled only by our admiration. You are real-life heroines and heroes. My husband and I are honoured to be here among you and extremely proud to welcome you to Rideau Hall.
You did not hesitate when faced with knives, bullets, fires, explosions, or the possibility of drowning. You did everything to answer the cries for help, to help others in need. Some of those we honour today even gave their lives in the attempt.
When we think of courage and bravery, we often think of battles and wars. Certainly Canada, in this Year of the Veteran, has taken it to heart to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their youth—in some cases, their very lives—in the name of justice and freedom.
But you also share this courage. You have found it in yourselves. Most of you faced unexpected situations, without any training or support. You could have avoided the dangers, played it safe, waited for help.
Instead, your strength of character shone through, and you achieved remarkable feats.
You have shown us beyond all doubt that nobility of the heart does indeed exist. And you have reminded us that we all have a responsibility to preserve life in any way we can—or at the very least, to improve it. While you reached out to save others from death, we should all reach out to help others in life.
There is far too much fear and misunderstanding in the world: fear of the other group, fear of the other race, the other language, fear of others in general. But how often have we seen suspicions disappear, when you take that first step toward someone else?
This country was built on acts of courage. To tame the wide open spaces of this land, to come here to start a new life and build a better future for one’s children, to create a place where everyone is equal in rights. As you have reminded us, we must never forget just how precious life is or how noble the women and men who, like you, are protecting life with courage and generosity.
You have restored our faith in our fellow human beings; you have shown us that great things are possible when you listen to your heart.
On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express our gratitude, not only for the lives that you have saved, but also for the lives that you have enriched by your example.
Thank you.
