Arms of Ian Roderick DuffyBlazonQuarterly Sable and Vert, on a cross Argent between in dexter chief a cinquefoil Ermine and in sinister base a harp Argent, a thurible Sable; SymbolismThe cross refers to Father Duffy’s identity as a Christian, and the thurible symbolizes his responsibility as a priest in offering worship. The black colour refers to the name Duffy, from dubh, the Gaelic word for black, and the green is the liturgical colour for hope. The black along with the white of the cross also alludes to the colour of a priest’s non-liturgical vesture. The “cinquefoil” is taken from the arms of the Diocese of Hamilton, having originally appeared on the arms of the Dukes of Hamilton and other Scottish Hamiltons. The harp represents Father Duffy’s interest in liturgical music as well as his Celtic heritage. |
MottoBlazonINTROIBO AD ALTARE DEI; SymbolismMeaning “I will go unto the altar of God”, this is the introit for the preparatory prayers at the beginning of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. This indicates the centrality of the celebration of the Mass in Father Duffy’s priestly ministry, as well as the fact that he regularly celebrates the Mass in both the Ordinary Form and the Extraordinary Form. |
