Symbolism
The colours and the cross motif are borrowed from the flags of Greece and Great Britain, referring to Mr. Kileeg’s Greek and British parentage. The stars represent accomplishments of Mr. Kileeg and other members of his family. The white star on the blue quarters represents an inkwell and its rays the light of knowledge, symbolizing Mr. Kileeg’s long service as an educator and administrator in the Toronto school system, as well as his own academic achievements and those of his family. The blue star on the white quarters represents the harnessing of electricity, a reference to Mr. Kileeg’s twin brother, an electrical engineer. It also resembles a cogwheel, a more general symbol of technical and mechanical achievement.

The griffin is a hybrid of a lion and an eagle, and thus it symbolizes Mr. Kileeg’s British and Greek ancestry. Among its many significances, this mythic beast is sometimes associated with the sun and with enlightenment, particularly when depicted holding a ball (or, in this case, one of the stars from the shield). It reinforces here the theme of intellectual accomplishment.
