Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, presented 38 Decorations for Bravery during a ceremony that was held at Rideau Hall.
The Decorations for Bravery are among Canada’s most prestigious civilian honours. The Decorations for Bravery offer three levels of recognition: the Cross of Valour (C.V.), the Star of Courage (S.C.), and the Medal of Bravery (M.B.). One Cross of Valour, one Star of Courage and 36 Medals of Bravery were awarded during the ceremony.
The Cross of Valour is Canada’s highest civilian honour. Since its creation in 1972, it has only been awarded 21 times.
Recipients of Bravery Decorations inspire us. Their sense of humanity brings us together as a community and as a country.
You give us hope. You demonstrate that within each of us lies the instinct to survive, yes, but also to protect others.
And you show us how this instinct can truly make a difference.
About the Decorations for Bravery
In 1972, Queen Elizabeth II established a series of medals recognizing courageous acts. Over the last 50 years, governors general have awarded Decorations for Bravery to nearly 4 000 recipients—from Canada and abroad, civilians and uniformed personnel, living and deceased—in recognition of acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances that range from potential drownings and vehicle accidents to animal attacks and burning buildings.
