Governor General to undertake official visit to Manitoba

June 2, 2023

OTTAWA, Ontario—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser will undertake an official visit to Manitoba from June 6 to 8, 2023.

The Governor General will meet with Manitoba officials, Indigenous leaders, and community and youth leaders working to advance reconciliation and improve the lives of residents of the province.

Tuesday, June 6

12 p.m.
Visit to 17 Wing Base

The Governor General will meet with Canadian Armed Forces members and learn about the Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical Training, which trains aircrew to survive in different environments.

Visit to Willow Place Women’s Shelter

Their Excellencies will meet with residents of the shelter, hear their stories and better understand how to help address violence against women in Canada.

Visit to the Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre

To reinforce Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine, Their Excellencies will meet with Ukrainians, including refugees who have fled their country since Russia’s invasion.
The Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre is one of North America’s largest and most unique Ukrainian cultural and non-profit heritage resource centres.

Upon arrival, Their Excellencies will be greeted by provincial representatives including the Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, and the Honourable Heather Stefanson, Premier of Manitoba. The Governor General will inspect a guard of honour.

Visit to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

Their Excellencies will visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, a place of learning, research, and cultural preservation, to meet with staff and learn about the centre’s ongoing work.
The centre works with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators, researchers, decision‑makers and the public to promote reconciliation and healing across Canada and beyond.

University of Manitoba Convocation Ceremony

The Governor General will attend a University of Manitoba convocation ceremony where she will be awarded a Doctor of Laws honorary degree in recognition of her immense impact on Indigenous communities in Canada, and her lifelong dedication to public service and diplomacy. She will also deliver the keynote address.
