Located within the Citadelle of Québec, the residence of the governor general is a remarkable heritage attraction. Steeped in history, this place has been the second official residence of Canada’s governors general since 1872. Join the thousands of visitors who come each year.

The governor general’s residence is located within the Citadelle of Québec, an active military base, situated atop Cape Diamant.

History of the Residence at the Citadelle

The Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Québec is housed in a military building built in 1831. It was originally occupied by British garrison officers. Lord Dufferin was the first governor general to live in the Citadelle residence, in 1872.
