Visit to Newfoundland and Labrador - September 21, 2018

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, undertook an official visit to Newfoundland and Labrador from September 20-21, 2018.

  • On September 21, 2018, Her Excellency started her day in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with a visit to 5 Wing Goose Bay.
  • Her Honour the Honourable Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, alongside the commander of the base, Lieutenant-Colonel Stéphane Racle, also participated in the familiarization flight.
  • On board the helicopter, Her Excellency was able to see Labrador's beautiful landscapes.
  • At 5 Wing Goose Bay, Her Excellency took part in a familiarization flight on board a CH-146 Griffon helicopter.
  • Afterwards, Her Excellency met with members of the Canadian Armed Forces personnel.
  • The Labrador Interpretation Centre showcases Labrador’s rich Indigenous history.
  • Local drummers performed during the reception.
  • Next, Her Excellency visited the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River.
  • The Birch Island Boardwalk was built in partnership with the city of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and a not-for-profit organization called Healthy Waters Labrador.
  • Later in the afternoon, the Governor General joined the Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, youth and volunteers on a walk along the new Birch Island Boardwalk.
  • Her Excellency took the time to chat with people who partcipated in the walk.
  • The Governor General and Lieutenant Governor then met with Wally Andersen, the Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
  • Afterwards, Her Excellency attended a reception where she met with community members from North West River.
