Visit to Washington, D.C. - Day 1

At the request of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, is visiting Washington, D.C., on February 10 and 11, 2016. Upon his arrival, His Excellency was greeted by Mr. Denis Stevens, Chargé d`affaires of Canada.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to American service members who have died without their remains being identified.

At Arlington National Cemetery, the Governor General laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The Governor General, as commander-in-chief of Canada, visited Arlington National Cemetery.

The Canadian Cross of Sacrifice honours citizens of the U.S. who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and gave their lives in World Wars I and II, and the Korean War.

Afterwards, His Excellency laid a wreath at the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice.

Later in the afternoon, His Excellency participated in a round-table discussion with leading Canadian educators, innovators, and entrepreneurs working in Washington, D.C.

Participating in the round-table was the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s Minister of Science.

During the round-table they discussed ways to increase international education and research collaboration and to advance Canada’s science diplomacy.
