Their Excellencies participated in a volunteer recognition event to honour community partners and volunteer organizations who have, with COSTI Immigrant Services, welcomed and helped settle over 1 900 Syrian newcomers to Toronto over the last few months.

"Last December, when we hosted a refugee settlement forum at Rideau Hall, I spoke of the arrival of refugees as both a challenge and an opportunity for Canada," said the Governor General. "Since that time, you have been working hard, bringing your compassion, your generosity and your enthusiasm to the task. You know better than anyone what the challenges are to refugee settlement, but you also understand the wonderful benefits these individuals and families bring to our communities. What wonderful people they are."
