Visit to Toronto

While in Toronto, the Governor General, as commander-in-chief of Canada, toured the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, including the woodworking studio.

"The Loran Scholars Foundation does so much for the cause of learning in Canada. I want to thank and commend all of the volunteers, donors and supporters who are here this evening," said His Excellency.

The Governor General delivered the keynote address at the Loran Scholars Foundation’s 27th annual dinner.

Later in the afternoon, His Excellency met with a group of Loran scholars for an informal discussion.

Creative Works Studio is an arts-based occupational therapy program that promotes healing and recovery for people suffering from serious mental illness.

During Mrs. Johnston`s visit to Creative Works Studio members were making clay sculptures.

Mrs. Johnston visited St. Michael’s Hospital’s Creative Works Studio to learn about its different programs and participated in an art therapy session with some of its members.

The Sunnybrook Veterans Centre opened as a war veterans’ hospital in 1948, and is the largest veterans’ care facility in Canada. Working in close partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, it offers long-term and complex hospital care to over 400 veterans.

At the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, His Excellency delivered remarks to thank veterans for their service to our country.

Founded in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charity that works in partnership with Canadian universities, donors and volunteers throughout the country to invest in young people who demonstrate character, commitment to service and leadership potential.
