Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Sharon Johnston were met at the airport by His Worship Doug Lawrance, Mayor of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, and his spouse Mrs. Cherry Lawrance.

The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is a state-of-the-art care facility providing a broad range of basic and specialized services along the continuum of primary health care.

In the afternoon, Their Excellencies toured the Meno Ya Win Health Centre and then met with local First Nation leaders and health professionals to discuss health care and mental health issues.

In the meantime, The Governor General participated in a round table with local school board representatives and students to discuss the different education initiatives in Sioux Lookout, including programs aimed at improving education for First Nations communities in the region.

Afterwards, Mrs. Johnston met with representatives from the Equay-wuk (Women’s Group) to learn about how the organization is working to empower women, youth and families living in 31 remote First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario.
