State Visit - President of Mexico - Day 2

On June 28, 2016, the second day of his State visit to Canada, the Governor General welcomed to Rideau Hall His Excellency Enrique Peña Nieto, President of the United Mexican States.

President Peña Nieto also delivered remarks.

"It’s up to us to create the smarter, more caring and inclusive societies of which we dream, working in partnership with all citizens, including the indigenous peoples of both Canada and Mexico."

"As a trading nation and active participant in building the architecture of international co-operation, Canada seeks to engage the world in a positive, constructive manner. Our relationship with Mexico is an important part of this effort."

Before the State dinner hosted at Rideau Hall, President Peña Nieto met with Their Excellencies, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mrs. Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.

Dozens of people gathered for the occasion. Over 140 commemorative trees grace the grounds of Rideau Hall, the official residence of the governor general of Canada. They mark visits by members of the Royal Family, heads of State and other dignitaries.

The President and Their Excellencies took a few minutes to shake hands with members of the public who were at Rideau Hall.

About 20 seasonal workers were here on this occasion.

Following the planting ceremony, the President met with mexican seasonal workers currently working in Canada.

As per tradition, the president planted a tree, an hemlock, on the grounds of Rideau Hall to commemorate his visit to Canada.

A toast was proposed to highlight the strong relations between Canada and Mexico.
