Visit to Toronto and Waterloo - Day 2
Their Excellencies took part in the official opening of the Centre of Excellence for Innovation in Aging, Ontario’s first purpose-built teaching long-term care home. Located on the North Campus of the University of Waterloo, the various buildings of the centre were designed to include learning, research and social spaces that encourage co-mingling of older adults, students, educators and researchers.

The long-term care home is divided into neighborhoods. One was named after Their Excellencies.

Their Excellencies took part in the grand opening of a new building at Renison University College that will be dedicated to programs that support global engagement through languages and culture.

During his remarks, the Governor General said: "This new building can be a beacon for global engagement through language and cultures. I am inspired to think of the learning that will continue to take place here."

Both Their Excellencies delivered remarks on this occasion. Mrs. Sharon Johnston said: "You’re doing important work here at Renison. I’m so glad to see that you’re expanding and having continued success. You’re helping real people and making our communities and our country healthier and more caring."

While on the University of Waterloo campus, the Governor General had the opportunity to see up-close the first self-driving golf cart. It was created by students of the university.

The Centre of Excellence for Innovation in Aging is a partnership between the Research Institute for Aging, Schlegel Villages, the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College. Representatives of all the partners were present to cut the ribbon.

During his speech, the Governor General noted: "For the first time in our history, there are more Canadians aged 65 and over than there are under 15 years of age.
