Visit to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador - Day 1

Upon his arrival in St. John’s, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, joined by His Honour the Honourable Frank. F. Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, presented the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award to 11 volunteers from the province. His Excellency delivered brief remarks on this occasion.

Created 20 years ago, the award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens.

Their Excellencies had a meeting with His Honour the Honourable Frank. F. Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and his wife Patricia Fagan.

The Governor General had the opportunity to discuss the purpose of his visit with the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Governor General also participated in a Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Ceremony. As national chair of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Canada, he presented the Gold Award to 98 young Canadians from Newfoundland and Labrador in recognition of their dedication and personal accomplishments within their communities.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has three levels—Bronze, Silver and Gold—which encourage youth between the ages of 14 and 24 to pursue activities in four areas: community service, physical fitness, skills development and outdoor exploration. Gold-level participants also complete a residential project.
