Swearing-in Ceremony

The Governor General was joined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of the 29th Canadian ministry.

The official oaths (Oath of Allegiance, Oath of the Members of the Privy Council, and Oath of Office) were administered to the Prime Minister-designate by Janice Charette, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet, at the commencement of the swearing-in ceremony.

The new Prime Minister received a warm standing ovation.

The ceremony was filled with emotion for Mrs. Grégoire-Trudeau.

Members of the public were invited to be on the grounds of Rideau Hall to witness the arrival of the Prime Minister-designate and members of the ministry.

Prior to the start of the ceremony, Their Excellencies met with the Prime Minister-designate and Mrs. Grégoire-Trudeau.

The Governor General congratuled Mr. Trudeau.

The swearing-in ceremony ended with the National Anthem sung by the Cross Town Youth Chorus.

His Excellency, joined by former Governor General Michaëlle Jean, are watching Prime Minister Trudeau's media statement from a television screen in the Tent Room.

During the ceremony, the Governor General entrusted the Great Seal of Canada to the Registrar general of Canada, the Honourable Navdeep Singh Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mrs. Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau mingled with the crowd before their departure.

The Prime Minister, in the presence of his Cabinet, delivered a statement in front of the Rideau Hall facade.

Mr. Trudeau and Mrs. Grégoire-Trudeau were joined by their three children.

His Excellency presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Canada’s 23rd prime minister and members of his new Cabinet.

Samantha Metcalfe and Cailyn Degrandpre, both 11 years old, are Inuit girls born and raised in the Ottawa area who have been attending cultural programs with the Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre since they were toddlers. They have been learning how to throat sing for several years and have been partners for the last three years.

More than 3,500 members of the public witnessed the swearing-in ceremony on the grounds of Rideau Hall.

Visitors were able to watch the ceremony on two screens located on the grounds.

The Prime Minister signed the oath books, followed by the Governor General and the Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet.

Just before entering the Ballroom, Mr. Trudeau had a special moment with his mother Margaret Trudeau.
