Because Mothers Matter Award

HIPPY is an evidence-based program that works with families in the home to support parents, primarily mothers, in their critical role as their child’s first and most important teacher. Ms. Maureen Boyd, Chair of the Board of Directors of HIPPY Canada.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston received the inaugural Because Mothers Matter Award from Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), during a ceremony at the residence of the Australian High Commissioner, in Ottawa.

Mrs. Johnston said a few words about how touched she was to be receiving the inaugural "Because Mothers Matter" award.

HIPPY Mother Nagham Fawaz also received a Because Mothers Matter award and delivered touching remarks. HIPPY operates 17 multicultural and 4 Aboriginal HIPPY sites, and has served more than 6 500 low-income, newcomer and Aboriginal mothers.

HIPPY strengthens families and communities by empowering mothers to actively prepare their children for success in school. The Governor General and Ms. Johnston are patron of the organisation. They pose here with Ms. Fawaz's family.

During the event, special guest Dr. Ruth Westheimer, author and media commentator, will deliver remarks on mothers making a difference.
