Anzac Centenary Service

The Governor General laid a wreath to pay tribute to the 8 709 Australian and 2 779 New Zealand soldiers who were killed during the Gallipoli Campaign that began on April 25, 1915. Some Canadian soldiers, who had signed up for service with the United Kingdom, were among the British forces at Gallipoli. In addition, several Canadian military field hospitals supported the campaign.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, attended the Anzac Centenary Service. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by His Excellency Simon Tucker, New Zealand High Commissioner.

The High Commissioner of New Zealand offered words of welcome and talked about the importance of Anzac Day — the first major military action of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the First World War.

"On this Anzac Day, and on this 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign, I hope that we can all remember the sacrifice and the bravery of those who fought for their country. And let’s continue to strive toward peace, which requires our constant attention and vigilance," said His Excellency.

Anzac Day is Australia and New Zealand’s most important day of commemoration. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the First World War, on April 25, 1915, in Gallipoli, Turkey.

The ceremony was held at the Canadian War Museum, in Ottawa.

Children also laid a wreath in tribute to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the ceremony, the Governor General visited the exhibit that recounts the Gallipoli Campaign on display inside the Canadian War Museum.
