50th Anniversary of the National Flag of Canada

Many Canadians braved the cold to come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada at Confederation Park in Ottawa.

"That red maple leaf between red bars is so embedded in our national life, so emblematic of our national purpose, we simply cannot imagine our country without it. It stands for the people we are, the values we cherish and the land we call home—from Atlantic to Pacific to the very top of the world. And when it is shown or worn in any corner of the globe, it elicits smiles of approval and admiration for the Canadian brand," said the Governor General.

As the national anthem was song by the Choir, the National Flag of Canada was raised.

The National Anthem was sung by the Massé School choir.

During the ceremony, Ms. Andrea Paine, Citizenship Judge, invited everyone to reaffirm their Canadian citizenship.

Along with Mr. Deepak Chopra, President and CEO of Canada Post (left) and Mr. Pierre Poilievre, Minister responsible for the National Capital Commission (right), the Governor General unveiled a new stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary.

The Governor General also unveiled a new coin with Mr. Michel Boucher, Vice President of the Royal Canadian Mint (right) and Minister Poilievre (left).

His Excellency and dignitaries cut the cake to celebrate the Canadian flag's anniversary.

Following the ceremony, the Governor General viewed a photo exhibit marking the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada.
