2015 Governor General’s History Awards

The 20th Governor General’s History Awards honour exceptional achievements in five areas: teaching, museums, community programming, scholarly research, and popular media.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presented teachers and other outstanding Canadians with the Governor General’s History Awards for their efforts to further an interest in and understanding of Canadian history and heritage. The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall on October 16, 2015.

Coyote Flats Pioneer Village, Coyote Flats Oral History Project, Picture Butte (Alberta) won the Governor General’s History Awards for Excellence in Community Programming.

c??sna??m, the city before the city, the Musqueam Indian Band, the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Museum of Vancouver, and the University of Waterloo won the the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Museums: History Alive!:

Mrs. Shashi Shergill from Connect Charter School in Calgary, Alberta, won the Governor General’s History Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Mrs. Jacquie Mydynski-Arp from Swan Valley Regional Secondary School in Swan River, Manitoba, was presented with the SEVEC History Award.

Mr. “Nodinamaad” Isaac Narciso Weber, from Toronto, Ontario, was also honoured in the Aboriginal Arts & Stories category.

Mary McPherson from Thunder Bay, Ontario, won in the Aboriginal Arts & Stories category.

Lou Savard from Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, won the Kayak Kids’ Illustrated History Challenge.

Ms. Janet Walker, President & CEO of Canada’s National History Society, delivered remarks on this occasion.

Mr. Lawrence Hill from Hamilton, Ontario, won the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media (Pierre Berton Award).
