Unveiling of Georges P. Vanier Statue

General Vanier a Canadian war hero and a great philanthropist whose altruism and dedication continue to inspire R22eR members today.

The Governor General took part in the unveiling of a statue in memory of General the Right Honourable Georges P. Vanier during a ceremony at the Citadelle of Québec.

"General Vanier truly was a great Canadian," said His Excellency. "He dedicated his life to this country, and throughout his long and eventful career he and his beloved wife Pauline strengthened Canada in countless ways. It is so appropriate to see this statue placed here at the Citadelle, official vice-regal residence, home of the Royal 22e Régiment, and one of the most historically significant sites in Canada."

This work of art was created by sculptor Johanne Lafond.

Major-General Forand also delivered remarks on this occasion.

A time capsule was also buried beside the statue.

It contains items highlighting the 100th anniversary of the Royal 22e Régiment (R22eR).

The first French-Canadian governor general (1959–1967) and an officer of the R22eR, General Vanier served Canada his entire life through his military and public service careers.
