Tribute to WWII Veterans - 75th anniversary

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, marked the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War and paid tribute to veterans during a special ceremony held at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, in Ottawa.

"It is essential that we remember the horrors of war and the courage of those who serve in our armed forces. By honouring, we are renewing our pledge as Canadians to uphold the values for which they fought and triumphed, and for which so many of their comrades made the ultimate sacrifice—the values of democracy, justice and freedom."

After delivering his remarks, His Excellency presented veterans with a commemorative lapel pin.

The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of State (Democratic Reform) presented veterans with personalized certificates of recognition.

Following the presentation of the pins and certificates, Mr. J.B. LeMay, WWII veteran, spoke on behalf of the veterans in attendance.

Four similar ceremonies will take place simultaneously in cities across Canada (Halifax, Québec, Edmonton and Vancouver). During the World Wars Commemoration period (from 2014-2020), the Government of Canada will mark significant centennial First World War and 75th anniversary Second World War milestones.

Events will pay homage to the many Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served during WWI and WWII, and will recognize the profound impact these historical events continue to have on the Canada we live in today.
