Sunset Ceremony

The Governor General was the reviewing officer for the parade.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, attended the Sunset Ceremony marking the 100th anniversaries of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), based in Edmonton, and the Royal 22e Régiment (R22eR), based in the City of Québec. The ceremony was held on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, on September 19, 2014.

La Musique du R22R was also on site to commemorate this milestone in the history of the Canadian Army.

During the review of the troops, His Excellency spoke with PPCLI and R22R members.

Close to 200 soldiers from the PPCLI and the R22eR performed a military parade.

The ceremony also included a feu de joie.

"I am honoured to be with all of you here on Parliament Hill for this celebration of two regiments that have played a vital role in our country’s history: Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and the Royal 22e Régiment. You may have different backgrounds—an infantry whose original soldiers were primarily of British descent, and the first all-French regiment in Canada—but you have much in common. You both fight for the same causes, and protect our nation, our people, our ideals and our freedoms," said His Excellency.

The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Colonel-in-Chief of the PPCLI and 26th governor general of Canada, addressed her troops.

Major-General Alain Forand, Colonel of the R22R, adressed his troops.
