State Visit to India - Day 1

This immense mausoleum of white marble was built in Agra by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his favourite wife. The construction started in 1632 AD, and it took 20 000 men working every day for 22 years to complete.

Upon their arrival in New Delhi, Their Excellencies were greeted by representatives of the Government of India.

Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands an important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra.

Their Excellencies posed with members of the Canadian delegation at the Agra Fort.

Their Excellencies walked through the gardens of the Agra Fort.

The Agra Fort comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; as well as audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.

This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses the imperial city of the Mughal rulers within its 2.5-kilometre-long enclosure walls.

Their Excellencies visited another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Agra Fort.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the world’s universally admired masterpieces.

Their Excellencies visited India’s most iconic monument, the Taj Mahal (“Crown Palace”).

Later that day, Their Excellencies and members of the delegation celebrated Team Canada's gold medal win at Canada House.
