Christmas Giving Moments

Later in the morning, Her Excellency met with individuals who seek the assistance of Ottawa Inner City Health, in partnership with the Salvation Army Booth Centre.

The Caring and Sharing Exchange is a local registered charity with a mission to provide neighbours with relief and dignity during difficult times of the year, in the most fair and efficient way possible. Since 1915, the Christmas Exchange Program (part of the Caring and Sharing Exchange) has provided assistance in the form of a food hamper or redeemable gift voucher to thousands of Ottawa families in need.

Joined by the Mayor of Ottawa, His Excellency helped volunteers pack food hampers.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson also said a few words.

The Governor General delivered remarks on the importance of giving and My Giving Moment, a national multimedia campaign that encourages Canadians to give back to their communities, neighbours, charities and causes.

The Governor General had the opportunity to engage with staff and volunteers.

Upon arrival at the Accora Centre, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, was greeted by Cindy Smith, Executive Director of Caring and Sharing Exchange, to help with its annual Corporate Hamper Packing Day.

The Salvation Army is an international Christian organization that began its work in Canada in 1882. It has grown to become the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country.

Mrs. Johnston presented gifts and served meals during a Christmas lunch.

Ottawa Inner City Health aims to improve the health and access to health care for people who are chronically homeless. Their main function is to coordinate and integrate health care services so that homeless individuals can receive the same quality of health care as other Canadians. Through a partnership with the Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre, they operate the Special Care Unit for Men.

The Governor General helped some of Santa Claus' elves fill hampers.
