Canadian Museum for Human Rights

The Governor General spoke with by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage, upon his arrival to the museum.

Following the Circle Ceremony, the Governor General, also patron of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, officially declared the museum opened.

The opening ceremonies took place outside the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Ms. Gail Asper, President and Trustee of the of Asper Foundation delivered remarks.

Winnipeg singer Ms. Maria Aragon was accompanied by a choir.

The Honorable Greg Selinger, Premier of Manitoba, delivered remarks.

The Canadian Tenors offered a performance.

His Excellency took part in the opening ceremonies of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"We can and must defend human rights at every opportunity. We must be willing to engage in dialogue, to learn, and to stand up for what is right and good. That will be this museum’s role in our society: it will help us in our continuous struggle to defend human rights," said the Governor General and patron of the museum in a speech delivered on the occasion."

Quebec singer Ms. Ginette Reno, performed the national anthem.

The CMHR is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights.

The cornerstone of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights was given by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Using immersive multimedia technology and other innovative approaches, the Museum will create inspiring encounters with human rights as part of a visitor experience unlike any other.

Mr. Stuart Murray, President and CEO of the CMHR and Mr. Eric Hughes, Chairperson of the CMHR Board of Trustees, gave a brief tour of the museum to His Excellency. CMHR is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region.
