2014 Canada Army Run

For the first time this year, Rideau Hall, the official residence and workplace of the Governor General, was part of the half-marathon course and hosted a cheering area for members of the public.

As patrons of Canada Army Run, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston attended the 7th edition of the event on September 21, 2014, in downtown Ottawa.

These exciting additions further enhanced the experience of participants coming from across Canada and around the world.

The Governor General then headed back to Rideau Hall where he greeted and cheered half-marathon participants.

Their Excellencies cheered on the participants at the start line.

Daniel Rochette and Richard Ivey were all smiles when they crossed the finish line.

During the event, His Excellency met with Honorary Colonel Rick Hansen, who participated in the 5-kilometre race with members of Solider On.

Canada Army Run is a unique running event in which Canadians can run, walk or roll side-by-side with members of the Canadian Armed Forces in half-marathon and five-kilometre events. Fundraising efforts and proceeds benefit Soldier On and the Military Families Fund.

Soldier On is a Canadian Forces program that aims to improve the quality of life of injured or ill military personnel and former personnel, through physical, recreational or sporting activities. It supports these personnel in increasing their independence, in developing new skills and in achieving goals. It also furnishes an opportunity for them to socialize and explore common interests, and share learning experiences

Retired police officer Lyndon Slewidge sang the national anthem before the official start of the 5-kilometre and half-marathon races.

The Honourable Robert Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, also delivered remarks.

His Excellency thanked all the participants and invited the public to join him at Rideau Hall to cheer on half-marathon participants as they make their way through the grounds.

Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, Commander of the Canadian Army, addressed the thousands of participants before the race.

Despite the pouring rain, participants kept running, rolling and walking with great intensity and determination.
