Visit to Newfoundland and Labrador - Day 1
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, visited the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador on June 12 and 13, 2013. As commander-in-chief of Canada, he addressed members of the Canadian Forces and their families at 5 Wing Goose Bay in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

His visit to Hopedale concluded with a tour of the Hopedale Moravian Mission Complex to learn more about how Moravians from Europe came to Labrador between 1752 and 1771 to establish missions.

Born out of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, the Nunatsiavut Government—an Inuit regional government— was established in 2005. Nunatsiavut is the first of the Inuit regions in Canada to achieve self-governance.

He also delivered an address. This was the first time a governor general spoke to legislative members of the Nunatsiavut Government: “Not even a decade old, and the government representing the Labrador Inuit is already making great gains. You are building your communities, ensuring preservation of resources, bringing success to the region. What truly impresses me is the speed with which you have transformed your community. Yours is an experiment in self-reliance and collaboration that is impressive in its success. Yet, it is still an experiment, evolving and changing as it goes.”

The Canadian Rangers, a sub-component of the Canadian Forces (CF) Reserve, provide patrols and detachments for employment on national-security and public-safety missions in those sparsely settled northern, coastal and isolated areas of Canada which can not conveniently or economically be covered by other elements or components of the CF.
