Visit to Calgary - Day 2

On the morning of September 17, 2013, Their Excellencies visited the Town of High River.

"Calgary is an inspiration to us all," said His Excellency. "During a time of great need, you came together, helping one another, remaining steadfast and strong. When flood waters hit Calgary, as well as other communities in Alberta, businesses opened their doors, shared their resources. Restaurants helped feed those on the front lines of flood relief. Non-profit organizations offered their skills and looked beyond their causes to assist how and who they could."

Alberta country music star Corb Lund performed as part of the event.

Their Excellencies also attended the Celebrating Community Heroes event hosted by His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary. During the event, His Excellency presented the Governor General’s Commendation for Outstanding Service to the citizens of Calgary in recognition of their contributions to the emergency and reconstruction efforts following the recent floods.

His Excellency concluded his visit at Rotary Park where he presented the Governor General’s Commendation for Outstanding Service to the citizens of High River and to volunteers from neighbouring communities who were involved in the emergency relief efforts following the floods.

Many buildings were severely damaged as a result of the floods.

During his walk through of the town, His Excellency met with local business owners who were affected by the floods of June 2013.

The Town of High River was severely affected by the floods and still remains under a state of local emergency.

Accompanied by His Worship Emile Blokland, Mayor of High River, the Governor General then toured the water plant and spoke with the operations crew about their contributions to the response effort.

Their Excellencies started their visit at the fire hall, where they met with first responders.

Mayor Nenshi also delivered a speech during the event.
