2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships

The medal presentation concluded with the playing of the national anthem.

His Excellency was pleased to participate in the victory ceremonies and to give Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir their silver medals.

They performed beautifully in the ice dance competition.

The crowd cheered as Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir took the ice.

Their Excellencies also had the chance to watch the competition in the company of Joannie Rochette, Patrick Chan and Princess Caroline of Monaco and her daughter.

Many proudly displayed their flags in support of Canadian skaters.

While at the competition Their Excellencies had that opportunity to meet Princess Caroline of Monaco and her daughter.

Since 1988, Benoît Lavoie has volunteered as a figure skating judge at world championship competitions and Olympic games. He has served as Skate Canada’s president, chair of its board of directors, and its representative at many national and international meetings, including those conducted with the Canadian Olympic Committee. He is also a technical controller and a referee, and has conducted seminars for new skating judges in Canada and abroad.

Evan Kosiner is the co-founder of Skate To Great, a charity that collects new and used skates for underprivileged children. Under the motto, “Every kid in Canada should have the opportunity to skate,” Mr. Kosiner has convinced private companies, community associations and sport organizations to come on board as national supporters. With over 40 volunteers supporting the operation and collection locations available throughout the country, roughly 1 500 pairs of skates have been collected to date. Mr. Kosiner also volunteers his time hosting a television show on Rogers Community TV, in Toronto.

In 1980, David Dore became the youngest president of the Canadian Figure Skating Association’s (CFSA) board of directors. Since then, he has been a volunteer coach, a member of the board, and a mentor and judge at world championship competitions and Olympic games. He is also involved with the International Skating Union, where his passion drives him to help the sport evolve in non-traditional skating nations.

William Boland has served on the national board of Skate Canada for 33 years, starting as a club volunteer before becoming club president and a synchronized skating judge. He has been responsible for various portfolios, including planning and marketing. He played an integral role in bringing the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships to London, and has served as the chair of the local organizing committee for this event. Thanks to his dedication, he has helped demonstrate how a smaller city can stage a world-class sporting event.

Their Excellencies attended the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario. Prior to the skating competition, the Governor General presented the Caring Canadian Award to four volunteers who have done much for the sport of skating.
